Jakarta – The Faculty of Engineering, Jakarta State University (UNJ) carries out Community Service (PkM) activities by presenting innovative technology for processing seawater into clean water that is fit for consumption. This program targets the people of Pantai Bawah Village, Muara Gembong District, Bekasi Regency, who have been facing limited access to clean water.

This activity, which has been taking place since Monday, July 22 2024, and was inaugurated on Wednesday, July 24 2024, was greeted enthusiastically by local residents. Through this activity, the team from the UNJ Faculty of Engineering seeks to provide real solutions for coastal communities by utilizing environmentally friendly technological innovations to convert sea water into clean water.

The implementation of this program involves three study programs at the Faculty of Engineering, namely Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Civil Engineering. Each team has an important role in implementing activities:

The Mechanical Engineering Team focuses on system design and performance of seawater treatment equipment,

The Electrical Engineering Team ensures that the electrical system and energy efficiency run optimally, as well

The Civil Engineering Team is responsible for infrastructure development and installation of supporting facilities.

Laboratory test results from the Bekasi District Health Service stated that the processed water met water quality standards suitable for consumption. Apart from building the installation, the UNJ team also provided training and handed over a number of equipment to the community so that the system could be managed independently and sustainably.

The Head of Pantai Bawah Village, Harun Zaen, expressed his appreciation for UNJ's contribution in helping his village community. "We are grateful to the UNJ team. So far our residents have had difficulty getting clean water, so the presence of this tool really helps with their daily needs," he said.

Meanwhile, the representative of Muara Gembong District, Kusuma Ridwan, stated that this activity was clear evidence of the role of universities in supporting community welfare. "This program is very useful, and we hope that cooperation like this can continue," he said.

Through this PkM activity, the UNJ Faculty of Engineering hopes that innovation in processing seawater into clean water can become a model for implementing appropriate technology in other coastal areas. This initiative is also in line with UNJ's commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in the areas of clean water and adequate sanitation (SDG 6) as well as innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9).
