SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Our Goals in Action
11.2 Support of arts and heritage
Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) demonstrates a strong commitment to supporting arts, culture, and heritage preservation through its academic programs, community engagement, and institutional policies. The university integrates cultural sustainability into teaching, research, and outreach activities, ensuring that the preservation of Indonesia’s tangible and intangible heritage remains an essential component of its mission as an educational institution.
1.1 11.2.1. UNJ provide free public access to open spaces and green spaces
Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) promotes sustainable innovation through the Edu-Science Techno Park (ESTP), an integrated hub connecting academia, industry, and local communities. This initiative focuses on research commercialization, green technology, and community-based entrepreneurship, managed collaboratively by the Faculty of Engineering, FMIPA, and the Business Development Unit. Activities include training on renewable energy, waste management, and digital innovation for small enterprises. The ESTP provides inclusive access for students and residents to co-create sustainable solutions, encouraging knowledge transfer and applied research. Measurable impacts include start-up incubation, patent generation, and local employment opportunities. This aligns with SDG 11 by fostering sustainable urban innovation ecosystems and reinforcing UNJ’s role as a catalyst for resilient and environmentally responsible communities.

1.2 11.2.5 contribute to local arts, in terms of number of annual public performances of university choirs / theatre groups / orchestras
Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) actively promotes cultural sustainability through inclusive artistic programs involving students and the wider community. The Faculty of Language and Arts presented the theatrical dance Lutung Kasarung at the National Multicultural Festival in Canberra, showcasing Indonesian cultural heritage on an international stage. Domestically, UNJ fosters creative engagement through events such as the PEKSIMINAS 2024 Keroncong Singing Competition, Batavia Chamber “Dekade” Concert, and the annual Welcome Concert for new students. The PGSD Exhibition Session 2 further bridges arts, education, and public participation by transforming campus spaces into accessible cultural forums. These continuous initiatives strengthen community engagement, preserve intangible heritage, and cultivate cultural appreciation, directly contributing to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by promoting inclusive and resilient cultural life.

1.3 11.2.6 UNJ deliver projects to record and/or preserve intangible cultural heritage
Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) consistently integrates cultural preservation and sustainability into education and community engagement. Through the Budaya Mapag Warsa celebration in Cisaat Tourism Village, Subang, UNJ revitalizes local wisdom and strengthens community-based tourism. The collaboration with Jakarta Taipei School in the Batik Indonesia Cultural Heritage Workshop promotes batik as a living cultural legacy while fostering intercultural understanding. Additionally, the National Geography Education Seminar highlights the strategic role of cultural heritage and local wisdom in achieving sustainable futures. These initiatives actively involve students, academics, and communities, aligning with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by safeguarding cultural heritage and promoting inclusive, resilient cultural sustainability.

11.4 Sustainable practices
Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) integrates sustainable practices into its campus management, academic activities, and community engagement programs to support the development of environmentally responsible and livable urban communities. The university’s sustainability agenda aligns with national and global efforts to build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities, as reflected in the Green Campus Initiative and various environmental awareness campaigns implemented across all faculties.
2.1 11.4.1 UNJ measure and set targets for more sustainable commuting
2.2 11.4.2 UNJ undertake actions to promote the % of more sustainable commuting
Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) promotes sustainable mobility through various campus-wide initiatives supporting eco-friendly and inclusive commuting. The university provides free and secure parking facilities, including the Spiral Parking Building, which accommodates thousands of vehicles and encourages the use of shared or low-emission transport. UNJ also applies a smart card access system to regulate vehicle entry, improving traffic efficiency and safety. Bicycle parking spaces and pedestrian-friendly areas are maintained across campus to encourage non-motorized mobility. Awareness campaigns on sustainable transportation and energy-efficient commuting are regularly conducted through academic and social media channels. These initiatives contribute directly to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by fostering environmentally responsible commuting behavior and reducing carbon emissions.

2.3 11.4.9 UNJ build on brownfield sites
Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) actively prioritizes the redevelopment of brownfield sites as part of its sustainable campus development policy. This approach reflects UNJ’s commitment to responsible land use and urban regeneration within Jakarta’s dense metropolitan setting. By revitalizing previously developed areas instead of expanding into greenfield zones, UNJ helps minimize urban sprawl, preserve green spaces, and reduce environmental degradation. The university’s asset and infrastructure development plan demonstrates a strategic focus on optimizing existing campus land and facilities to support modern academic needs while promoting sustainable and resilient urban growth.
