Jakarta, 21 August 2026 — Jakarta State University (UNJ) continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainable management of the campus environment through cleaning culverts and drainage channels on the UNJ campus and surrounding areas on Friday, 21 August 2026.

This activity was carried out through collaboration between the Waste Management Center (WMC) UNJ, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government through the Cleanliness Department, and the community around the campus. The activity involved 15 officers from the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government's Cleaning Department, 10 UNJ officers, as well as residents from RT 07 and RT 08, RW 14.

As a unit responsible for waste management and the campus environment, UNJ's Waste Management Center (WMC) plays a role in coordinating the implementation of activities, identifying priority areas, and building coordination between the university, local government and the community.

Cleaning is carried out by removing rubbish, mud, sedimentation and other materials that have the potential to obstruct water flow in culverts and drainage channels. This activity is part of UNJ's preventive efforts to ensure the drainage system can function optimally, especially in the face of high rainfall in urban areas.

Impact on the Environment and Society

Cleaning activities have a direct impact on the quality of the campus environment and the surrounding residential areas. Drainage channels that are cleaner and free from blockages help improve the smooth flow of water and reduce the risk of inundation which can disrupt academic activities, residents' mobility and community activities around campus.

Apart from the benefits to the drainage system, this activity also helps reduce the accumulation of waste in the environment, prevents waste from being carried into water bodies, and supports the creation of a cleaner and healthier environment. Cleaning sedimentation and accumulated material also helps maintain the channel's capacity to collect and channel rainwater.

Another impact is increased community participation in environmental management. The involvement of residents of RT 07 and RT 08 RW 14 shows that there is real collaboration between universities and local communities in solving shared environmental problems. The community is not only the beneficiary, but also plays an active role in maintaining the cleanliness and sustainability of the environment around campus.

Collaboration with 15 officers from the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government's Cleaning Department also strengthens institutional relations between UNJ and local governments in managing the urban environment. Meanwhile, the involvement of 10 UNJ officers strengthened the university's internal capacity in maintaining the cleanliness and sustainability of the campus environment.

In the longer term, it is hoped that this activity can contribute to creating a campus that is more resilient to the risk of flooding and inundation, improving the quality of the environment for academics and the surrounding community, as well as building a more participatory environmental management culture.

Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals

This activity is a form of real implementation of UNJ's commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Cleaning culverts and strengthening drainage systems contributes primarily to SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) through efforts to maintain the quality and smoothness of water management systems; SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through increasing urban environmental resilience and reducing the risk of inundation; SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through waste management and prevention of environmental pollution; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaboration between universities, local governments and communities.

This activity also shows that UNJ's sustainability commitment does not stop at policy and planning, but is translated into environmental actions that provide direct benefits to the campus and surrounding communities.

Through the Waste Management Center (WMC), UNJ will continue to encourage integrated, participatory and sustainable environmental management by involving academics, government and the community. This collaboration is expected to be part of ongoing efforts to make UNJ a clean, healthy, resilient, inclusive and sustainable campus.
